The author did an extraordinary depiction of this time period. The brutality and barbarism were well portrayed in a stark realism. Also, the notion of chivalrous knights were a rarity. The landscape was mainly of one lord dominating another in a competitive hierarchy. The interesting story is how an idealistic minor lord maneuvers in very defined roles to advance. The love between men during this period could lead to death ( unfortunately, it still occurs in parts of the world today). The story mainly unfolds between a hostage and his assigned warden. The pacing is good with credible characters. It is an exciting read with intrigue, twists and turns and royalty plus lords to ensure your interest. The intimate scenes were generally done well absent being the primary focus. Personally, I would have preferred a few less descriptive love scenes ( I get it ..let's move on ). Nevertheless, it did not detract from this nail biting(still have not kicked the habit) adventure. Usually, the sample is a good indicator of a writer's ability to spark my interest. Try it....I don't think there will be disappointment!
