Henwood is a progressive, but his analysis of the political culture that fosters and supports Hillary Clinton will be illuminating for anyone across the political spectrum. The author clearly does not like Secretary Clinton, but the main thesis of his short book seems to be that because a cross-party coalition of amoral elites has reached a kind of critical control over the political system, the only kind of person who can make it to the top is someone like Hillary. The problem then highlighted in this book is the system, not Clinton, though the system has its apotheosis in her 2016 campaign (not that she kept things above the belt against Obama in 2008).The author does a good job of showing that mainstream democrats have basically sold out their traditional base of working and middle class voters (providing the opening for right-wing populists to thrive), and that trying to conceal total allegiance to Wall Street and the Military Industrial Complex by lip service rhetoric about gay rights, feminism, and black lives is really just a way to throw the rubes an occasional bone while doing nothing to address substantive issues.Henwood is unique among modern progressives in that, while he may recognize Trump's "deplorables" are a hopelessly irrecoverable firewall lost to the "alt right" now, not all of their grievances stem from the fact that they lack education and are xenophobic monsters. These people were jettisoned by the democratic party (who did some math on the demographics and realized they could ignore traditional support sources like unions and working class whites), and now these "precariat" as I've heard them called elsewhere, have nothing to lose by using Trump as a sort of firebomb to exact revenge on their corrupt masters.The picture that ultimately emerges of Hillary is of someone without a soul or principles, someone who (even by the incredibly low standards of the day) is willing one day to call young black men "super predators" and to support de defacto segregation (she remained a "Goldwater Girl" into the 90s), or to chastise the police for engaging in systemic racism, based merely on nothing more cogent than the results of a focus group.This is a depressing, but maybe necessary read, for those who still somehow hold out hope that things have not reached their absolute nadir as we approach the national election, less than a month away. Some readers have complained that Henwood recapitulates things here that he said elsewhere, but since I had no familiarity with him prior to his move to Jacobin Magazine (a socialist rag I sometimes read) his particular voice-sharp, moral, and sometimes funny- is new to me. Highest Recommendation.
