In the landmark thirtieth installment of the bestselling series the New Yorker has called “an unusually potent cocktail of atmosphere and event,” Guido Brunetti is forced to confront an unimaginable crimeIn his many years as a commissario, Guido Brunetti has seen all manner of crime and known intuitively how to navigate the various pathways in his native city, Venice, to discover the person responsible. Now, in Transient Desires, the thirtieth novel in Donna Leon’s masterful series, he faces a heinous crime committed outside his jurisdiction. He is drawn in innocently enough: two young American women have been badly injured in a boating accident, joy riding in the Laguna with two young Italians. However, Brunetti’s curiosity is aroused by the behavior of the young men, who abandoned the victims after taking them to the hospital. If the injuries were the result of an accident, why did they want to avoid association with it?As Brunetti and his colleague, Claudia Griffoni, investigate the incident, they discover that one of the young men works for a man rumored to be involved in more sinister nighttime activities in the Laguna. To get to the bottom of what proves to be a gut-wrenching case, Brunetti needs to enlist the help of both the Carabinieri and the Guardia di Costiera. Determining how much trust he and Griffoni can put in these unfamiliar colleagues adds to the difficulty of solving a peculiarly horrible crime whose perpetrators are technologically brilliant and ruthlessly organized.Donna Leon’s Transient Desires is as powerful as any novel she has written, testing Brunetti to his limits and forcing him to listen very carefully for the truth.

I have read many of this series of 30 books and each has been special. I read a lot of books, from the ancient classics to modern works of philosophy, astrophysics, the biographies of great leaders, and the Brunetti series of Donna Leon. Leon’s books are a bit like a holiday to me, as many of the books that I read require intense concentration and are, admittedly, a slog to get through. (I have never reviewed any other book in this series before.)That doesn’t mean her books are frivolous or poorly written. They are not. They are magnificent, on average. And that, I believe is because she doesn’t write around plots. She writes around an extraordinary cast of characters who are sure to make you both think and smile. It is, perhaps, the greatest ensemble of characters ever assembled by a novelist of this era.Unfortunately, she appears to have flipped her formula in this book. This is a book written around a plot and we actually see very little of our favorite ensemble, barring Burnetti himself, of course. In the end this is a crime novel, which is a line she never crosses in her prior work.I like crime novels, too. But there is a very different litmus test for crime novels than there is for books about an entertaining ensemble of characters. In a crime novel there are many more gaps in the storyline that the author must address before the reader can no longer suspend their disbelief. And, unfortunately, she doesn’t do that here as well as the best crime novelists. So I would normally rate this book at least a 4 if for no other reason than it is part of the Brunetti series and written by Donna Leon. I couldn’t bring myself to do that, however, both because I miss my favorite ensemble (The family, the titled in-laws, the incomparable Signorina Elettra, and, of course, the stoic Inspector Vianello. Even the unprincipled but benign Vice-Questore Patta.)There is always Venice. And having been there myself I can say that no author has ever done it the justice that Leon does. And the cuisine. She makes eating read like a visit to a place of worship. All told, this is a great series. And if you love to read and are in need of some superb but lighter fare, I highly recommend the series. I will accept that this book is but an anomaly.
