So, I like MM stories, especially when one of the M's sort of starts out straight. This was supposed to be that story. However, the whole 'I'm straight' that Cope spouts all the time is so blatantly not true, that it's inconceivable that he believes it. The flashbacks that come more often than they should are pretty bad - they are legitimately gay - and I don't mean silly. I mean they read very gay. In these flashbacks, the two boys hug each other a lot - the word snuggle is used, even - and when they have sleepovers they sleep in the same bed. So ... not normal. Also, Penn strokes Cope's hair a lot - to comfort him, apparently, when they are laying in bed together, and still Cope thinks he's not gay? No way. When they become friends again, after being enemies for two years, they pick right back up where they left off. In one scene, Cope's dad comes into his room and sees the two boys all tangled up together in bed, and then apparently is able to be convinced nothing was happening. There's no way you wouldn't know your kid was gay if you saw this stuff.This story sort of read like a Tijan book, complete with one dimensional parents - one mom took off, the other one is a pill popper, and the two dads are both abusive control freaks.I haven't decided if I'm going to finish this, since the entire plot is too juvenile. It's like the author is just writing stuff and making it happen, regardless if it doesn't make sense. The scene where the coach yells at Penn for breaking his hand and calling him a 'damn idiot' in class - just no.So, if you're looking for something that doesn't really seem plausible at all and sort of just wanders, this is the book for you. It could have been good, if it had been done better.
