This is the third book in the thorn chapel series. This is the “book” about Rebecca and Delphine. I put book in quotations because even though this book has those two on the cover and this is their story, you wouldn’t know by how much space Poe and Auden and Saint take in this book. The irony of the white protagonists, with two books already under their belt, taking center stage in a book about a Black woman and her plus size influenced girlfriend. This book is so enthralled with the love story that is Poe and Auden, and Saint too, I guess, that you’d be forgiven to think that this was Feast of Sparks 2B.This series center on a group of friends, who like their parents before them, are inexplicably drawn to a house in the English countryside. In the hierarchy of characters there’s Poe, the American library, reminiscent of Sookie Stackhouse as having the list irresistible **** that no man alive can resist. The secret to life is hidden between her legs. Every man is in love with Poe. Poe is thisclose to being Mary Sue. She’s up for anything and anyone, she can do no wrong and is beloved by everyone. Then there’s Auden, who’s rich and a prince and is the most handsome man in all of the land. Auden is a son of a mean, rich guy who’s dead. Did I mention Auden is a rich prince? Because you’re going to read a lot about how he’s a prince, like every other line. Stories about other characters end up being about how Auden is a reluctant rich prince. Did I mention he’s a prince and rich? He owns a foreboding house in the country, he’s an heir and very rich. Then there’s Saint. Poor Saint.Rebecca and Delphine are sidelined in their own book. Which is sad, because I’ve been intrigued by Rebecca since book one. What is this sensible Black woman doing at this house. Every Ghanaian woman knows better than to play with demons. Her character really gets the short drift when it comes to characterization, which is a shame because she had so much potential. I wanted to like this book, to know more about Rebecca and Delphine, but unfortunately it’s yet again the Poe and Auden story featuring Saint with appearances by Rebecca, Delphine and Beckett.
